Second week of owl banding

Our latest Northern Saw-whet Owl, banded on March 30 at 2am.

As March comes to a close, it comes as no surprise that early spring along Lake Superior can best be described as winter. Recent nights have included a mix of high winds, sleet, snow and freezing temperatures. That said, we have had some windows of decent conditions when Northern Saw-whet Owls (NSWO) have continued the start of their spring migration. There were a few recent nights when we hoped that the migration might pick up. It did not, but the weather patterns have really been a mess and we’re thankful that the saw-whets have continued to migrate in those small windows we’ve had this week. So far this spring we have banded 74 NSWO and caught seven more that were previously banded. Our two recent recaptures came from Babcock, WI and Hilliardton Marsh, ON. Both hatched in 2023, and were banded last fall.

There is only one day left for our matching campaign! So many of you have already given and we are so very grateful. We need to raise just $524 more by the end of day on March 31 in order to access the full $5000 of matching funds from an anonymous donor. This is such a great way to double your donation to our cause. Please spread the word and help us reach this goal!
