Warm & Wet Weather

The past week was the warmest and wettest of the season, including some torrential rain storms. One storm dumped almost 5 inches on Whitefish Point. Unsurprisingly, it was slow for owls, but the juvenile saw-whets continued at a steady trickle. We banded 1-5 juveniles nightly since our last post, putting us over 200 owls banded for the season. It is often the case in lower reproductive years that our peak night occurs around this time of the summer season. We’re finally going to see a change in this weather pattern over the coming nights, which has us hoping that the owls will pick up again as the weather improves.

Nature Notes: The tiny young spring peepers have arrived. There’s not much to say except- they are so stinking cute.

We’ve also had some pretty large wolf spiders around. We were admittedly surprised to find their faces kind of cute.

We have two special programs this weekend, plus the last summer weekend for visiting the owl banding. Join us for a great time during the Paradise Blueberry Festival!
