Event Announcements
We have some exciting and unique events planned for this fall, if you will be up in the Paradise area, you should consider joining us!
After a great performance this summer at Music on the Bay, WHORLED is returning to Paradise for a special benefit house concert! We are honored to have them bring their time & talent all the way from Grand Rapids to our small community. This is the first event of its kind up here in the Whitefish Point area, and we are so excited to have a great evening raising funds for the Friends of Whitefish Point.
30 tickets will be available for purchase for this unique concert opportunity. Snacks and a range of drinks (both with and without alcohol) will be provided. Purchase your tickets today for a very special evening of music and to help ensure that the Friends of Whitefish Point has the funds to continue the important owl research & educational programs this fall.
For more information about Whorled, check out their website: https://www.whorledband.com.
We are excited to offer two fall birding tours in the greater Whitefish Point area this coming fall. Tour itineraries will be tailored to our participants’ priorities, offering opportunities to pursue regional specialties (such as Spruce Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, and Red Crossbill), to witness migration’s rush at Whitefish Point, and to enjoy other elements of this area’s unique natural life. Included with each tour is an evening visit to the Friends of Whitefish Point’s owl banding station!
September tour emphases:
Red-necked Grebe migration at Whitefish Point- more Red-necked Grebes pass Whitefish Point in fall than anywhere else in North America.
A great assortment of warblers, sparrows, and other songbirds in the woods.
With some luck, jaegers or Sabine’s Gull at Whitefish Point
October tour emphases:
Peak waterbird migration at Whitefish Point, with highlights such as scoters and Long-tailed Ducks passing through in large numbers.
Northern finches and northern forest owls could be showing up at this time.
Some of Michigan’s most unprecedented vagrant birds have shown up in October at Whitefish Point.
The Friends of Whitefish Point runs an Owl Banding Station during the spring, summer and fall at Whitefish Point. Visit and learn about the wonders of migrating owls. You may even have a chance to see an owl up close!
There are three dates left to visit during the summer season, and we just added dates for this fall. So far, fall seems to be the most popular time for visiting, so if you are planning a trip up, make sure to get your tickets early!
Blueberry Festival in Paradise, MI is this weekend, and we will have a table there, staffed with our amazing volunteers and staff, to talk with you about any and all of our fall events and the research we are conducting at Whitefish Point. Friday & Saturday 9-5pm, Sunday 9-4pm. We hope to see some of you there!
